In 2006, Debbie was diagnosed with cancer. Her husband is an LA County Firefighter. She was introduced to Firefighter Cancer Support Network when she was diagnosed. After she completed all of her treatments, she was asked to mentor at a Long Beach Memorial Hospital. After completing the course she not only became a mentor for the hospital, but she volunteered to be a mentor for of the FCSN. Debbie wanted to give back to the FCSN after they were there for her and her family. After years of being a mentor she was asked to be the wellness coordinator in 2012.
